WWOOF Tanzania has launched! https://wwoof.net/news/wwoof-tanzania-has-launched/ Mon, 28 Apr 2025 19:37:16 +0000 https://wwoof.net/?p=236766

We are thrilled to announce the launch of WWOOF Tanzania, a new local organization that will manage WWOOF activities in Tanzania. This means that starting April 28th, any host located in Tanzania will be transitioning from WWOOF Independents to WWOOF Tanzania.

What Does This Mean for WWOOFers?

  • After April 28th, if you wish to contact farms in Tanzania, you will need to visit the WWOOF Tanzania website (wwoof.tz) instead of the WWOOF Independents site.
  • Your profile, reviews, and all of your conversations will be automatically migrated to WWOOF Tanzania, so you don’t need to worry about losing any data. All your information will stay intact – you’ll just log in on a different site.
  • Memberships: If you have an active membership with WWOOF Independents, it will also be activated on WWOOF Tanzania at no extra cost, alongside your membership with WWOOF Independents. If, for any reason, you log into WWOOF Tanzania and notice that your membership hasn’t been activated, please contact Evarist, the local coordinator for WWOOF Tanzania, and he will ensure your membership is granted free of charge.

What Does This Mean for Hosts in Tanzania?

  • Hosts in Tanzania don’t need to do anything! All hosts will be migrated automatically to the WWOOF Tanzania platform, and their membership will be maintained without any action required from them.

We are excited about this new step, and we hope this change will make it easier for you to connect with the WWOOF community in Tanzania. As always, if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to get in touch! Evarist, the local coordinator for WWOOF Tanzania, is available for any support you might need.

Thank you for being part of our community, and we look forward to continuing this journey together with WWOOF Tanzania!

WWOOF joins the 2024 Organic World Congress with IFOAM! https://wwoof.net/news/wwoof-joins-the-2024-ifoam-world-congress/ Mon, 06 Jan 2025 21:23:59 +0000 https://wwoof.net/?p=236431

The International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) is a global organization at the forefront of promoting organic agriculture and sustainable farming practices. Every three years, IFOAM hosts its World Congress, a major event bringing together leaders, experts, and practitioners from across the organic and sustainability sectors. The 2024 IFOAM World Congress, held in Taiwan this past November, served as a critical platform for sharing innovations, fostering connections, and driving collaboration in the organic movement.

As new members of IFOAM, WWOOF — a global network dedicated to connecting volunteers with organic farms to promote cultural exchange and sustainable living — represented by the Federation of WWOOF Organizations (FoWO) — participated in the event. FoWO’s involvement underscored its growing role within the international organic community and its commitment to advancing the principles of sustainable agriculture worldwide.

Representation Matters

Chemi Peña, Coordinator at WWOOF Spain and a Director within FoWO, had the honor of attending the 2024 IFOAM World Congress in Taiwan this past November. This event brought together global leaders, experts, and practitioners in the organic agriculture and sustainability sectors. Held every three years, this gathering serves as a pivotal moment for sharing innovations, forging connections, and driving collaborative efforts in the organic movement.

Participants of IFOAM 2024 Conference

Peña’s participation marked a milestone for WWOOF and the Federation of WWOOF Organizations (FoWO), as it represented a growing recognition of the organization’s role within the global organic community. FoWO joined IFOAM in July 2024 with the intention of being more and more active in the organic movement worldwide.

Reflecting on the experience Peña shared, “It was a privilege and a fantastic experience to attend the IFOAM 2024 World Congress… diving directly into the very core of IFOAM’s operations.”

The congress offered a platform for WWOOF to build visibility, network with key stakeholders, and explore potential collaborations. Meaningful conversations with participants from over 100 countries brought WWOOF’s mission to the forefront.

“Some attendees expressed surprise, saying, ‘I knew about WWOOF, but it’s the first time I saw someone representing it,’” Peña recounted. This highlights the importance of having a physical presence at such events, moving beyond emails and online exchanges to foster genuine connections.

Opportunities for Collaboration

The event not only highlighted IFOAM’s extensive ecosystem of initiatives but also underscored the alignment between FoWO and IFOAM’s missions. Peña observed, “FoWO and IFOAM are complementary organizations where both can learn from and support each other at various levels.”

By networking with attendees from South America, Asia, Africa, and beyond, Peña introduced WWOOF to new audiences and shared contact information that could spark future collaborations. This outreach aligns with WWOOF’s commitment to fostering global connections in organic farming.

Looking Ahead

Peña’s attendance not only elevated WWOOF’s visibility but also opened new doors for partnerships and ensured the organization continues to play a vital role in the global push for sustainable, organic agriculture.

Be part of the global organic movement!

Whether you’re looking to volunteer, connect with organic farms, or support sustainable agriculture, WWOOF offers opportunities to make a difference. Visit wwoof.net to learn more and join the community today.

The Importance of Soil Health & Regenerative Practices https://wwoof.net/news/the-importance-of-soil-health-regenerative-practices/ Thu, 05 Dec 2024 21:01:32 +0000 https://wwoof.net/?p=236214
Today is World Soil Day, a moment to emphasize the critical importance of soil health and share valuable resources on how we can improve and protect our soil—for our well-being today and for the generations that follow. Soil is the foundation of life on Earth, supporting ecosystems, feeding communities, and regulating our climate. Yet, it is increasingly at risk due to erosion, over-farming, pollution, and urbanization. Healthy soil isn’t just dirt—it’s a living, breathing ecosystem teeming with microorganisms, insects, and organic matter. Without proper care, degraded soil loses its ability to grow food, store carbon, and support life.

Regenerative organic agriculture offers a solution. This method emphasizes soil health by reducing chemical inputs, enhancing biodiversity, and using sustainable practices like crop rotation, composting, and no-till farming. By replenishing nutrients naturally, these techniques build long-term soil fertility while combating climate change and improving yields.

Caring for soil truly begins at the roots—both in practice and in spirit. Many WWOOFers express a deep desire to reconnect with nature, often describing an urge to “dig their hands into the soil.” This connection is no coincidence; soil is the essence of farming, a living foundation that fosters a profound bond with the earth. WWOOF hosts share this passion, dedicating themselves to cultivating healthy, vibrant soil on their farms, gardens, smallholdings, and crofts. Through methods like no-dig gardening, composting, biodynamics, and regenerative farming, each host contributes to the shared goal of restoring and revitalizing the land. If you’re ready to join this mission, here’s how you can take action to help restore soil health and support regenerative practices.

Living Soil from Host Guardian farm, Peru, WWOOF Independents

Start with Organic Matter

Soil thrives on organic material, which feeds microorganisms and enriches fertility. Adding decomposed plants or animal-based matter enhances the soil’s ability to hold water, retain nutrients, and resist erosion.

  • Compost Kitchen and Yard Waste: Instead of tossing food scraps, compost them. Compost is a powerhouse amendment, supplying nutrients and encouraging microbial life.
  • Use Mulch: Cover your garden beds with natural materials like straw, leaves, or wood chips. This layer reduces evaporation, prevents erosion, and slowly breaks down into organic matter.
  • Leave Fallen Leaves: Instead of raking leaves in fall, let them decompose on-site. They act as a natural fertilizer and create habitats for soil organisms.

Plant Diversity for Resilient Soil

The plants you grow have a profound impact on your soil’s health. Diversity isn’t just for ecosystems—it’s essential for soil too.

  • Rotate Crops: Avoid growing the same plants in the same spots each year. Crop rotation replenishes nutrients and disrupts pest cycles.
  • Grow Deep-Rooting Plants: Vegetables like radishes or perennials like comfrey break up compacted soil and draw nutrients from deeper layers, making them available to surface plants.
  • Plant Nitrogen-Fixers: Legumes, such as peas and clover, take nitrogen from the air and deposit it into the soil, boosting fertility naturally.

Semillas from Hosts Finca Ghispikay, Colombia

Guard Soil During the Off-Season

Soil can deteriorate quickly when left bare, especially during winter months when plant growth slows. Protecting your soil ensures it stays healthy year-round.

  • Sow Cover Crops: Fast-growing plants like oats, rye, or vetch provide a living cover for your soil during cold months. They reduce erosion, suppress weeds, and can be tilled into the soil in spring as “green manure.”
  • Mulch Bare Areas: If planting isn’t possible, spread organic materials like straw or compost over garden beds to shield them from harsh weather and retain moisture.
  • Leave Beneficial Weeds: Some weeds, like dandelions, protect exposed soil by acting as a natural cover. Manage them so they don’t overtake your garden.

Agroforest from WWOOF Independents Hosts in Marsella-Risaralda, Colombia

Support Regenerative Agriculture in Your Community

Your food choices and advocacy can help shape farming practices that prioritize soil health.

  • Buy Regenerative or Organic Produce: Support farms that use techniques like composting, cover cropping, and rotational grazing. Look for labels like “organic” or “regenerative organic.”
  • Join a CSA or Farm Share: Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs allow you to buy seasonal, locally grown food directly from farmers who use sustainable methods.
  • Advocate for Soil-Friendly Policies: Push for government support of regenerative practices. Policies that prioritize soil health benefit farmers, the environment, and future generations.

Test and Understand Your Soil

Knowing your soil type and its needs is critical for maintaining its health.

  • Perform a Soil Test: Identify whether your soil is sandy, clay, silty, or loamy and test its pH. Adjust your amendments and plant choices accordingly.
  • Improve Structure: Add sand or organic matter to heavy clay soils for better drainage or compost to sandy soils to improve water retention.

Raise Awareness About Soil Conservation

Protecting soil isn’t just about personal actions; it’s a collective responsibility.

  • Educate Others: Share what you’ve learned about the importance of soil health with friends and family.
  • Engage in Local Efforts: Join or volunteer with organizations dedicated to restoring soil and promoting sustainable agriculture.
  • Use Your Voice: Advocate for practices that combat soil degradation, like agroforestry, cover cropping, and reduced chemical use.

Why It Matters

Healthy soil doesn’t just grow food—it sequesters carbon, filters water, and supports biodiversity. Regenerative practices are a pathway to addressing some of today’s most pressing challenges, from climate change to food security.

With every action, big or small, you contribute to a global movement to bring soil back to life. By improving the soil in your garden and supporting sustainable farming practices, you help build a healthier, more resilient planet.
